Len Starbeck told his story, covering the challenges, excitements, frights, and love for his work while touring the world to utilize his medical prowess. The term “medical diver” may sound vague but speaks volumes when the content of this memoir is unraveled. Len Starbeck gave a detailed narration of his experiences. He shared how he was enlisted into the US navy as a medical diver, going through the rigorous, painful, pleasurable pieces of training to the actual fieldwork.

Feasting my eyes on the pages of Medical Diver, I noticed Len Storbeck’s passion and love for his work. I could call him a courageous man with guts. This was seen in some instances. One example was pursuing a thief (later figured to be a voyeur) in their tent. Another instance was during his initiation as chief; he was tied with duct tapes, and other unconventional forms of initiation were meted out to him. He was asked his name, and he replied, “You can call me mister.” It was not an expected reply, especially from a mere selectee at that point. It only took courage to take everything in his stride.

One thing that fascinated me about the book was the use of pictures. They helped me validate the veracity of the adventures. In addition to this, all the chapters in the book had well-coined titles. I’m keen on titled chapters because they tell me what to expect in a chapter.

The book exposed me to some self-defense tactics. I could get those tips medical diver? That was pretty amazing. anywhere, but coming from an experiencedAlso, I found their motto at the Diving Medical Technicians (DMT) group intriguing and humorous. The motto says, “To heal the sick and raise the dead.” I love that the book ended with the prescription for a medical diver — requirements, examinations, exercises, methods of treating injuries, and the likes. I would have been utterly disappointed had the author not made provision for interested readers to take the initiative.

I’d rate the book 3 out of four stars.

Medical Diver will primarily benefit people in the medical profession. They’re the ones who will get a better understanding of all the terms and processes.
